Chemistry Connections

Chemistry Connections is a pro bono design project created in partnership with Xavier University’s XULA MOLE initiative, a mobile outreach program that brings laboratory enrichment to New Orleans high schools and inspires students to pursue STEM and biomedical careers. Our team was challenged to develop an educational game that helps students easily grasp ionic bonds. As part of the model team, I focused on product design and fabrication, translating scientific concepts into a hands-on learning tool.

product development

Using Rhino modeling and laser-cut fabrication, our team developed a modular set of pieces capable of forming 20+ ionic bonds. After exploring multiple form options and consulting with XULA MOLE, we refined the design to circular tiles with strategic bump-outs that slot together only when the bond is correct. This shape-and-color system encourages students to learn through interpretation and play—visually revealing which ions connect without explicitly instructing them.
