CHALK
Chalk is a conceptual non-profit company dedicated to establishing an in-prison arts program in Louisiana with the aim of reducing recidivism through creative expression. Rooted in the belief that graphic design can function as a megaphone for social good, the project uses design as an advocacy tool, amplifying the need for rehabilitative, human-centered alternatives within the justice system. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, weaving, and textiles, Chalk would offer incarcerated individuals meaningful outlets for expression supported by on-site art therapists.
Why Louisiana?
Louisiana has the highest incarceration rate in the United States, 1,067 per 100,000 people, with more than 50,000 residents behind bars and 86,000 cycling through local jails each year, often for non-violent drug or property offenses. The state spends over $625 million annually on a system that has quadrupled in size over 40 years, despite declining crime rates and no evidence that mass incarceration improves public safety. This makes advocacy essential: Louisiana’s incarceration crisis is vast, costly, and largely invisible, demanding alternatives that prioritize rehabilitation and community.
